When splitting is the right job
Use this page when the PDF has pages you do not want in the file you send. The extra sheets are not a size bug. They are the wrong document for this recipient.
Pull a chapter out of a binder
An 80-page pack with a 6-page section you will actually attach. Type that start and end. The rest stays on your device.
One sheet per file
Invoices, certificates, or signed pages often have to travel alone. Split every page when a portal wants a separate PDF for each sheet.
Skip the pages in the middle
Add two ranges, such as 1-3 and 10-12. Each range is its own download. You do not have to keep pages 4-9.
How to take one page out of a PDF
Stay on Extract Page Ranges. Set the start and the end to the same number, for example 4 and 4. That page downloads as a new one-page PDF. The name includes those page numbers.
This copies the page. It does not delete it from the original. If you wanted one edited file with that page gone, that is Remove Pages.
Ranges versus every page
The two modes write different numbers of files. Neither builds a zip.
- One range: One new PDF named with the start and end.
- Several ranges: One PDF per range, saved one after another. Allow multiple downloads if the later files never appear.
- Split all pages: One PDF per page. A 10-page file becomes 10 saves.
- The file you dropped: Unchanged on disk. Close the tab if you only needed the extracts.
Text and pictures on the copied pages stay as they were. A split does not recompress images.
Can I split a PDF by bookmarks?
Not on this page. The splitter reads page numbers, not the outline or bookmark tree. If you know chapter 2 is pages 14-21, type that range. If you only have bookmark names and no page numbers, open the PDF, note the page, then come back.
What a split copies, and what it leaves behind
Goes into the new PDF
- The pages in each range, in that order.
- Selectable text, when those pages had it.
- Pictures and rotation exactly as they were.
Does not happen here
- The original file is not rewritten.
- Pictures are not shrunk. Compress an extract if it is still heavy.
- Bookmarks and a zip of all outputs are not created.
If you opened Split and that was the wrong tool
Split writes new files from pages you want to keep as extracts. Other jobs stay on their own URLs.
- One file with leftovers gone. Blank backs or an appendix should disappear, and you still want this document. Delete those pages instead of extracting around them. Remove PDF pages
- The same pages, just smaller. Every sheet stays. Photos or scans make the attachment bounce. Shrink the pictures. A split will not rewrite them. Compress PDF
- Pages that loaded on their side. A scan is sideways in the preview. Rotate first, then extract the range if you still need one. Rotate PDF
Downloads, blockers, and locked files
The browser stopped after the first file
Each range or page is its own save. Allow multiple downloads for this site, then run the split again.
I wanted holes in one PDF
You wanted Remove Pages. Split never punches gaps in the original. It only writes extracts.
The file asks for a password
Unlock it with the password you know, then split. This page cannot copy pages it cannot open.
After the extract is on disk
The cut is done. Size, orientation, or a combine step may still sit in front of send.
The extract still misses a portal cap
A 6-page scan can still be larger than 10MB. Compress that extract, not the original binder.
The leftover binder still has junk pages
If you meant to keep one cleaned original, delete those sheets on Remove Pages.
A page in the extract is sideways
Rotate that file before you attach it.
You now have three small PDFs to send as one
Merge the extracts after each one fits the cap.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I extract one page from a PDF?
Use Extract Page Ranges and set start and end to the same number, for example 4 and 4. That page downloads as a new one-page PDF. The original file stays on your device.
How do I split a PDF into single-page files?
Choose Split All Pages. Each page downloads as its own PDF. A 10-page file becomes 10 saves. Allow multiple downloads if the browser stops after the first file.
Can I split a PDF by bookmarks or chapters?
Not here. This tool uses page numbers, not the bookmark outline. Find the start and end page of the chapter, then type that range.
Can I extract pages 1-3 and 10-12 in one go?
Yes. Add two ranges. Each range downloads as its own PDF. Pages 4-9 are not copied.
Why does my browser ask me to save many PDFs?
Each range, or each page, is a separate download. This splitter does not build a zip. Allow multiple downloads for this site if later files never appear.
Does splitting a PDF make the file smaller?
Each extract is roughly the weight of those pages. Pictures are not recompressed. If an extract is still too heavy to send, compress that file next.
Does a split keep selectable text?
Yes, when those pages already had selectable text. A split copies the page. It does not flatten it into an image.
What happens to the original PDF after I split?
Nothing. You download new files. The file you dropped stays on disk until you replace or delete it yourself.
I want one PDF with pages missing. Is that Split?
No. That is Remove Pages. Split writes extracts. Remove writes one edited PDF with the leftovers gone.
The extract is still too big to email. Now what?
Compress that extract. Typical mail and portal caps are listed on the Compress page. Confirm the number on the service you send to.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Yes, after you unlock it with the password you know. This page cannot copy pages from a file it cannot open.
