Question 1

How do I remove print and copy restrictions from my own PDF?

Accepted Answer

Drop the file here. If it opens without a prompt, the tool copies the pages into a new PDF without owner flags. Download _unlocked.pdf. The original is unchanged.

Question 2

Do I need the password to unlock a PDF that already opens?

Accepted Answer

Usually no. Owner restrictions are stripped by resaving the pages. You need a password only when the file refuses to open at all.

Question 3

Can this tool crack a PDF open password I do not know?

Accepted Answer

No. An open password has to be typed correctly. This is not a recovery or brute-force tool.

Question 4

What is the _unlocked.pdf file?

Accepted Answer

That is the new copy with owner restrictions removed, and with the open password removed if you supplied it. Your source file stays on disk.

Question 5

Is it legal to unlock a PDF?

Accepted Answer

Use this on files you own or have permission to change. Do not use it to bypass someone else's protection.

Question 6

Does unlocking a PDF change the page quality?

Accepted Answer

No. Pages are copied, not rasterized. Pictures are not recompressed.

Question 7

Why does Unlock fail with a wrong password error?

Accepted Answer

The file has a user password and the text you typed does not match. Try the password you used when the file last opened.

Question 8

Will Unlock remove a watermark or a signature?

Accepted Answer

No. Those are marks on the page. Unlock only removes security dictionaries and writes a new file.

Question 9

Can I unlock a PDF and then add a new password?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Download the unlocked copy, then open Encrypt and set new user and owner passwords.

Question 10

Does Unlock work offline in the browser?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The job stays in this tab. The file and any password you type are not uploaded.

Question 11

What if the PDF is damaged as well as locked?

Accepted Answer

Unlock first if you can open it. If the reader still errors after that, copy the pages on Repair PDF.
