Question 1

Does PDF grayscale keep selectable text?

Accepted Answer

No. Pages are rasterized at 2x and saved as JPEG 0.9 gray. The letters become pixels.

Question 2

What quality does grayscale use?

Accepted Answer

2x render, then grayscale JPEG at 0.9. That is a sharp print, not a tiny thumbnail.

Question 3

What is the _grayscale.pdf filename?

Accepted Answer

The new gray copy. The color original is not overwritten.

Question 4

Will grayscale always shrink the PDF?

Accepted Answer

Often, not always. A lean vector file can grow when it becomes full-page JPEGs. Compress if size is still wrong.

Question 5

Is grayscale the same as making a PDF look scanned?

Accepted Answer

No. Scanned PDF adds grit and texture. Grayscale is a clean black-and-white raster.

Question 6

Should I flatten instead of converting to grayscale?

Accepted Answer

Flatten if you only need fields locked and text selectable. Grayscale if you need gray pixels.

Question 7

Does grayscale upload the PDF?

Accepted Answer

No. Rasterizing stays in the browser.

Question 8

Can I convert only some pages to grayscale?

Accepted Answer

This pass hits the file you drop. Split out the color sheets you want to keep, gray the rest, then insert.

Question 9

Can I get color back from _grayscale.pdf?

Accepted Answer

No. Open the color original.

Question 10

Why do charts look muddy after grayscale?

Accepted Answer

Hue is gone. Lines that relied on color can merge. Keep the color file for screen review.

Question 11

Should I grayscale before I add page numbers?

Accepted Answer

Add numbers after if you want them as sharp artwork on the gray pages, or before if you want them rasterized into the picture too.
